Guys, I Bought a House! (let me tell you why you should care)

Guys, I bought a house! I can’t wait to give my love to this cute little 1950s Cape Cod and make her mine, but first, let me tell you why this is a big friggin deal and why you should care.⠀

As a self-employed single female, buying a house on my own always felt out of reach. I thought buying would be hard because a single self-employed income isn’t all that sexy to lenders, or so I thought. Well, guess what? You know what’s sexy to the right lender? Excellent credit and working your ass off and making your own damn money on your own. If you’re single female and self employed, let me shout this louder for the people in the back, YOU DON’T NEED ANYONE ELSE TO DO THIS AND YOU DON’T HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL YOU FIND “THE ONE” TO DO IT WITH. YOU ARE THE ONE. ⠀

And while we’re on the topic of being a single female. My last long term relationship was with a talented contractor who could pretty much build or fix anything. Because of that, the little voices in my head made me feel I had to be in a similar situation to take on the type of house I always wanted: a house that needed love so I could leave it better than I found it (pretty much my mantra with anything I do in life). Well, guess what? You can do that on your own, too. Work hard. Make money. Be willing to put in sweat equity where you can while also using your hard earned cash to hire a talented contractor who can help bring your vision to life.⠀

SO back to the house. When I first set out window shopping, I sent a list to my AMAZING realtor so she could get a feel for what I’m all about. The other day I looked back at the exact list I sent her (below) and somehow this house checks the boxes: ⠀

I love being able to see the potential of a space and make something better than I found it. I not scared of giving a place a little TLC⠀

  • A house with character ⠀

  • Green space/area to entertain, would love a fenced yard. Love porches.⠀

  • A sense of community/in-town (being able to find something in downtown Milton would be a dream)⠀

  • Being able to walk/run from home⠀

  • I don't need a huge home – I think a well-designed smaller home has more character ⠀

Anywho. It’s going to be a ton of work, and for that, I’m so damn excited and grateful for the opportunity. Speaking of gratitude, shoutout to my amazing realtor Teke Davidson...like I told her, somehow I found a friend, sister, mom, realtor, and therapist all rolled into one. There couldn’t have been someone more perfect for me than her. Not only was she amazing, but she also connected me to my lender Chrysta McBlain who made all the difference (and, another great new friend made in the process!) From the moment we met until the very end, Chrysta had all the answers (so smart, creative, quick, and knowledgeable ー I don’t think she ever was without an answer that I didn’t feel truly confident in) and most importantly, she always made it all feel possible. She gets the way the world is and was such a great partner for me as a self-employed borrower. Thank you thank you thank you to you both. ⠀

The best part? This entire thing happened in Milton. I’m a total sucker for keeping it local, and the fact that my realtor lives around the corner in one direction and my lawyer down the road in the other and lender just a few minutes away is all pretty special to me. Milton reminds me a lot of Waterbury and I’m so excited to be a part of another great small downtown community. And, once my parents are down here full-time, it’ll be the first time in 18 years that we’ll live in the same town ⠀

Welp, here goes nothing...
